Mothers & Volunteering
Mothers and volunteering are life long partners; they go hand in hand through a mother's life time. Mothers volunteer their services in numerous ways starting with running errands for the family to participating in school activities of their children. This trend continues into middle age when they volunteer as mature age mothers for a diverse range of services including telephone support lines and counselling.
Since its inception in 1979, Dial-A-Mum has seen many services mushroom and disappear, but our service survives due to the precious time dedicated to the service by our volunteer mums. Presently Dial-A-Mum has 30-40 volunteers, who range in age from their early 30's to their mid 80's, and whose motivation and enthusiasm has kept the service functioning despite dramatic changes in the society.
Today, less time is spent listening and discussing issues than is necessary in families, and therefore there is a greater demand for counselling services. We do NOT call ourselves counsellors, but we ARE confidential listeners and we DO care.
